MOTHERHOOD SHOULD BE A DIRTY WORD

By Endang Firdaus

Some girls do not want to be mothers, especially those in business. According to them, becoming a mother is not easy., and they do not want their duties in business obstructed by the activities of a mother.
Certainty being a mother is not easy. A mother must be wise, patient, gentle, and economical. She must be strong. A creative mother is required in a family. She must be able to set a good example for the members of the family, especially her children so that her family will be a good one.
A mother must have broad insights in carrying out her duties. She has to be wise and patient. She should be broad-minded. She should think things over an over and then do them. In that way, there will not be problems in her family, and she and her family will live peacefully. The happiness of a mother will always be reflected in her family.
A good mother must be economical in the family finances. Money must not be wasted. She must know how to use the money to its best advantage, so that the family financial situation is harmonious.
The nature of a mother must be gentle. She must do all of her duties carefully. There should be no indecency in her life. Her way of life, her habits and behaviour must be good, so she will set a good example for her family, and also for the public in general.
Becoming a mother, of course, is not easy. A girl who wants to be a mother must be prepared. She must know how to discriminate between the duties of a mother and business duties, so that she will be successful as a mother and as a businesswoman.
Becoming a mother is a noble duty. Girls need not be ashamed of becoming a mother. They need not be afraid of losing their virginity to their husbands because becoming a mother is noble. If girls are conscious about the functions of a mother, motherhood need not be a dirty word. (Published on Hello English Magazine No. 38, January 1989)

Short Story

THE IDOL

By Endang Firdaus

Lola is the best. She has a beautiful face. She is smart. Her parent is very rich. All students and teachers of SD Tugu know it. But, Lola is not proud of it. It makes her friends like her. So do her teachers. All love her. Lola becomes an idol.
“I wish I’m you, La,” says Murti, Lola’s friend, at school’s canteen. She idolizes Lola very much.
“Why” ask Lola.
“You are so beautiful!”
“So are you.”
“But ….”
“But what?”
Murti cleans her mouth wit a handkerchief. She says, “You have everything. You are beautiful, smart, and rich. You are very lucky, La. Everyone wants to be like you very much!”
“All are from God, Mur.”
“Many thing make me idolize you, La.”
“What are them?”
“First, you are so kind.”
“Then?”
“Not boast.”
“What’s more?”
“And …”
“And what?”
“And, please treat me!”
“Huuu!”
“Hihihi!
Lola pays.
She and Murti then leave the canteen. Lola smiles to everyone. Murti feels jealous as all friends ask and wave to Lola only. All idolize Lola. They do not care Murti is beside her. Lola is really an idol.
“I wish I’m Lola,” grumble Murti.
Murti is sure next she will be like Lola. She will try to get it. She knows she will not really be like Lola. “It’s never mind I’m not as beautiful as Lola. It’s never mind I’m not as rich as Lola. But I hope I will be smart like her. I will study hard to get it,” she says in heart.
